Lowestoft theme park project

“If you put a lot in, you will get a lot out” Roger Waller my boy’s brigade captain.

I can remember him saying that to me when I was a young boy, planning my quest to obtain the boy’s brigade highest award the queen’s badge. a few years later I managed to earn it and now the badge is in its casing with the certificate on display to remind me, ‘how it all began!”

My next ambassador project was design a theme park,

I felt great. I re-built the model theme park rides, I had that quote in my mind. When I arrived at the school with the rides covered up. The kids go “what’s under there”. It’s a surprise and head to the reception. After some coffee I purposely leave my models last to enter the room and help to set up. The thing about that day is when I carry the models in and unveil them to the kids. Their eyes lit up in amazement and when I turn the Ferris wheel motor on well you can imagine what the kids thought. As the day progress I was amaze with the kid’s models being built especially taking

inspiration from mine. But there was one moment I will treasure and probably the three children as well. They were left out from their groups so the teacher gave them to me and I set them a task to build a Ferris wheel step by step. In the end when I adjusted it a bit, I showed them what they built and gave them all the credit. They showed it to all their friends in amazement and made their day, I handed them a certificate of achievement and congratulate them for their effort.

What this Eco house needs?

Arriving at the school for my next project, I carried my small k’nex model and shown it to the kids. The teacher asked the kids, “Do you want build your own or help Adrian (me) to build a big one?”

The kids screamed build a big one. I began building the house until the first group came along. I gave them the water wheel to build. Moments later, it was made and spinning successfully. They excitingly, left the table. The teacher said, “what this Eco house needs is a shed!”

The next group came along and I taught them to build a slanted shed. In success we attached it to the house and they disappeared. The teacher came up with another group and said, “Great work, but what this Eco house needs is something to collect the water!” I puffed through my nose, and set the group the task of building water barrels. The best thing was we made not one but two water barrels, and attached them to the house. We also attached the water wheel onto the house. The group disperses, and the quiet words hit my ear, “What this Eco house needs is a windmill!” I turned around and spotted a shadow covered up by the next group. I gave them the task to build a panel of the windmill each as I continued building the

house. The panel attached to the centre piece and the kids ran off back to their tables. “What this Eco house needs stabling and…” “Solar panels,” The teacher tapped me and bellowed, “Do not interrupt the teacher or would you like to do lines?”  “I will crack on send me the next the group.” They came up and laughed at the ordeal. We built the assembly house for the windmill and created the solar panels. I collapsed onto the chair as my mind was frazzled from making ideas out of thin air. The teacher came out of nowhere and said, “What this eco house needs is…” I looked at her tried to say, “One more thing an

d I will get you to do it!”

“Nothing else, it looks amazing well done,”

The children gathered around and said, “Your amazing Adrian you built a big house,”

“Correction we built this house together except your teacher.”

“I supervise the construction so we all did it together what an amazing team we are.”

Transit of Venus 2012

The one thing I wanted to see in my lifetime spoiled by the traditional Great British bank holiday weather, rain and cloudy. However, thanks to the internet I manage to get to see in Australia but a recording though. The main reason I want to see and record the event, so I can show and talk about it for my planet and science talk to the children.

It is a rare event that happens once (or if we are lucky twice) a century. The reason this is because Venus orbit is slightly slanted, shown in the diagram above.

If you want to see the next one you will have to wait over a century for the next one.

Lunar Rover Project

Apollo15LunarRover

This project is probably one of many projects i enjoy doing and entertain. It was building moon rovers and tested them on a obstacle ramp. It enlighten my childhood memories. Anyway, we try to based the Rovers on the lunar Rover from Apollo 15.

Lucky we had a test driver for the Lunar Rovers;

Some say he was brought back as a moon sample and evolved,

Some say there’s a galaxy named after him KA 5419,

We all know is he’s call the Stig?

There was two success points to make the Lunar Rover a pass;

1, The Lunar Rover makes it down the ramp.

2, Stig stays in the Lunar Rover.

Only 10 out of 40 Rover’s survived his instance testing, it came to him he wanted one thing, a race.

Luckily, Mario stepped in to take the challenge. Lined up at the start, it was equal support for the drivers and all of a sudden there off. Mario had successful booster and takes the lead, leaving the Stig eat dust. However, Mario took a shortcut and fell off the ramp leaving the Stig to take victory.

Can anyone beat the Stig?

soft drinks enterprise

I arrived at the school doing another ambassador activity soft drink enterprise. Also I was with people from BT and HSBC which was pretty scary so I represented as Tesco with my experience of retail. I had my own office place for the first time,

Well make shift one. Children started coming in with really good ideas, like bands of flavour drinks and teaming up with Haribo. It was great being an adviser again also picked the healthiest option for lunch pizza and chips with BBQ sauce. After lunch I became a judge and done one group. I was amazed how the group was organized, from their own mock up advert, prototype of the drinks bottle to their very own mascot.

Unfortunately they didn’t win but I couldn’t compare the groups because I only had one. However as I left the school I began to think now as I have done two enterprises event will the new generation take new skill they have learnt through these events and use them in their future? I believe they can if they have the willingness to do it.

Prom enterprise event at Bungay

At first when i signed up for this event, my first thoughts were ‘this will be interesting’ but then i realise ‘proms, are not my cup of tea.’

But after reassurance from my supervisor  i felt okay with it and gave the nod that i will help out. Nearer to the day it became clearer, the tenth years (14-15 year olds) after split up into 32 groups of 8, the task was ‘to create a company from one of the following categories photography, food and transport. and bid for a phantom prom event. the overall winner will receive prizes.’ When i arrived at the school there was a group of us ambassadors. i was appointed the photography consultant and began working. It was good watching the students creating companies and making mood boards, business cards, tickets and pitching the actual presentation. Also it was amazing to see the high standards the students produce, however in the final judgement it down to 3 photography companies, and 2 from the other two categories. after the final judgement it was the photography group won the overall event. i felt really proud of myself but the main thing is i made new friends, becoming a stronger person and having a great time as an ambassador.

Finger print project for stem ambassador

Doing a finger print project with the children (120 separated in 5 classes) was great fun. talking to them about the three main patterns Whorl, loop and arch

Loop                                         Whorl                                             Arch

After talking about the three main patterns of the finger prints. We showed them how we take them with the ink pad and pencil and see through sticky tape. It was easy with the ink pad but got a bit messy. The other method was shading a square block big enough for your finger to press onto the block. Then we got some tape and and placed our marked fingers onto the sticky tape and pulled the tape off and placed onto plain paper and compared prints. It was great fun and everyone, including the children, enjoy themselves which was the main thing.

What is a stem ambassador?

People kept asking me “what is a stem ambassador?”

A Stem ambassador or (Science, Technology, Engineer and Maths ambassador) is a person who supports projects and activities from primary schools to secondary schools, giving children inspiration in the four subjects above. also the ambassador can put on clubs for children to attend to help and enjoy the subjects.
